It is with great pleasure that we present to you the latest edition of THE GROG, A Journal of Navy Medical Culture and Heritage. Original articles in this special end-of-the-year issue range from the epic to the curious and include Dr. John Greenwood's tale about the Navy Medical Department and the great earthquake at Arica in 1868, and Mr. J.J. Ahern's look at a nineteenth proposal to establish a course in Navy surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. As always we hope you enjoy your humble tour of Navy medicine's past.
